Temple Overview
London Sri Murugan Temple is a Hindu Religious charity which was formed in 1975. In 2005, the Trustees opened a grand new Temple built mostly in granite with a 50 feet Rajagopuram (Tower) conforming to the South Indian (agama shastra) architectural principle. The Temple has become a phenomenal success not only as a place of worship but also as a community centre for social and cultural services. London Sri Murugan Temple is now a well established landmark in the London Borough of Newham. Many students from local schools, visitors from further afield and international countries visit the Temple on a regular basis.
Job Purpose

To contribute to organisation growth through the quality service to ensure the culinary needs and requirement of the temple and devotees.

Postholder will work alongside the Temple Madappali Priest to prepare distribute prasadham to devotees and support with the food preparation for all auspicious events/functions of the Temple. The successful postholder will also support the team with the washing and polishing of all cooking utensils where appropriate.

Prepare and provide sanctified food offering by meeting minimal requirements of purity and austerity and abide by strict guidelines, such as the proscription of the use of meat in any food prepared or served in the temple.

Be of exemplary character befitting the above position and adhere to temple processes and policies.

Provide assistance and engage in all religious activities of the temple.

Roles & Responsibilities

The postholder will play an important role in the preparation of prasadham and vegetarian food for the devotees of the temple. Additionally the postholder should be able to make Indian sweets and savoury treats for auspicious occasions and events.

Coordinate with the Madappali priest to ensure food and beverage is available during morning, midday and evening. Joint working with the Madappali priest in preparing vegetarian food to support all religious pooja services pertaining to the temple.

Provision of special food preparation to commemorate Hindu deities with a symbolic enactment of marriage of particular manifestations of God and Goddesses are celebrated (Thirukkalyanam), birth of deity (Krishnajanmashtami) or Vaikasi Visagam, Thai Poosam) of Lord Murugan and all other auspicious days throughout the year.

Adherence to food preparation and health and safety guidelines.

Should be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of the kitchen area and where appropriate help with the purchase and stock control of all grocery items and vegetables are available to facilitate food preparation at all times.

At least three years’ training and experience in a similar role is essential.

Applicant must be Tamil speaking and practice Hinduism.

All applicants are required to provide relevant documentation which demonstrates their eligibility to work in UK.

Candidates should affirm their faith as a Hindu as the job role involves assisting in worshipping of the Hindu Gods and the preparation of the food in a traditional way and offering to the deities and devotees. Candidates should be willing to accept both Saiva and Vaishnava faith of Hinduism as the Temple is having both deities.

Must have good communication skills and should demonstrate the ability of having good interpersonal skills to work with all priests, devotees, temple staff and Board of Trustees.

Carry out such other reasonable religious duties as may be requested from time to time by President, Secretary and/or other board of Trustees.
