Temple Overview

 

London Sri Murugan Temple is a Hindu Religious charity which was formed  in 1975.  In 2005, the Trustees opened a grand new Temple built mostly in granite with a 50 feet Rajagopuram (Tower) conforming to the South Indian (agama shastra) architectural principle. The Temple has become a phenomenal success not only as a place of worship but also as a community centre for social and cultural services. London Sri Murugan Temple is now a well established landmark in the London Borough of Newham.  Many students from local schools, visitors from further afield and international countries visit the Temple on a regular basis.  

Job Purpose

  1. To contribute to organisation growth through the quality service to ensure the musical needs and requirement of the temple and devotees

  2. Postholder is required to play Nadhaswaram (Indian Pipe) music during the pooja, homam, abhishekam to the deities to make the devotees more involved in the prayers. It is a divine nature of the music - mangala isai (religious divine music) and it is very traditional to have in the Hindu temple.

  3. Be of exemplary character befitting the position of the Nadaswaram musician and adhere to temple processes and policies.

  4. Provide assistance and engage in all religious activities of the temple.

Roles & Responsibilities

 

  • The postholder will be required to perform Nadaswaram (double reed wind instrument) music during hindu worship services which include ceremonies and rituals. Coordinate with priest(s) to perform divine music during all poojas, homam and abhishekam times which predominately occurs during, morning, midday and evening. The typical hindu rituals and ceremonies may include daily deity worship, ie archana, homam or aarti, special deity celebrations, Sri Murugan, Sri Durga and Lord Vinayagar pooja, Shiva Abhishekham or Govardhan pooja.  Special ceremonies include chariot festival procession, Navarathri, Valakaappu, Skanda Sashti, Poonule Sadanghu, Navagraha pooja and life sacrament ceremonies, ie samskaras, weddings, prebirth and scared thread and other special festivals throughout the year.  These are to be performed at the temple and other religious sites/venues as per the requirements.

  • The postholder should a be a talented and qualified person to perform all essential mangala isai/vadyam – a boisterous and exuberant notes from Nadaswaram.

Other Requirements

  • At least three years’ training and experience in a similar role is essential.

  • Applicant must be Tamil speaking and practice Hinduism. 

  • All applicants are required to provide relevant documentation which demonstrates their eligibility to work in UK.

  • Must have good communication skills and should demonstrate the ability of having good interpersonal skills to work with all priests, devotees, temple staff and Board of Trustees.

  • Carry out such other reasonable religious duties as may be requested from time to time by President, Secretary and/or other board of Trustees.
